After starting out with RKC Waalwijk and then moving on to Hamburg, Boulahrouz seemed to have hit the big time when Jose Mourinho and Chelsea came calling for his services in the summer of 2006, yet the glory he much have envisaged on his arrival at Stamford Bridge was not to follow.
Mourinho admitted soon after his arrival in London that Boulahrouz has been signed primarily as a back-up player capable of filling in a variety of roles across the back line, with his ‘versatile’ tag working against him as he never got a chance to nail down a definitive position in the Chelsea team.
A season-long loan at Sevilla preceded his move to the German Bundesliga in 2008 and there is a good chance that he will find himself in the familiar position of bench warmer at Euro 2012 this summer. Maybe, this talented performer is destined to live in the shadow of more prominent players for the rest of his career.
