Elmander was handed the unwanted tag of ‘flop signing’ when he struggled to score the goals to justify his £8 million price tag at Bolton, yet he eventually found his feet in the Premier League and the club he left behind missed his goal touch after he was sold to Galatasaray in May 2011.
Elmander has seen plenty of Europe in his well-travelled football career. From humble beginnings in Sweden to a more grand stage with Feyenoord in the Netherlands, he went on to play for Brondby and Toulouse before finding his way to England four years ago and, while he has not been prolific in Turkish football, he has turned in a decent first season in Gala colours.
His importance to Sweden was emphasised during their Euro 2012 qualifying push, as he played in all ten games, scoring twice in the away win against Moldova. Zlatan Ibrahimovic may take all the headlines among the Swedish striking clan, but his sidekick is just as important to their hopes this summer.
