The back-up stopper to Ireland legend Shay Given, Westwood will need to be ready to fill some massive shoes at a moments notice during Euro 2012.
Westwood’s lack of first team action at club level this season much be a concern to Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni, yet he has turned in a handful of decent performances for Sunderland when his fleeting chances have come along.
Born in Manchester, he qualifies to play for Ireland via his grandmother when he was playing for Carlisle United. A spell at Coventry preceded his move to Sunderland and he insists he will be ready to perform at the highest level if the call comes this summer.
“Shay Given is an amazing goalkeeper and he has dominated the Irish keeping scene for a long time,” says the keeper who played in one Euro 2012 qualifier when Trapattoni’s first choice was out injured. “My ambition is to be Ireland’s No.1 at some point, but I’ll have to wait for that.”
