One of the mainstays of the Russian national team line-up in recent times, this no-nonsense defender combines efficiency with dangerous attacking bursts from his full-back berth.
After playing in eight of his nation’s qualifiers, Anyukov can expect to see plenty of tournament action at Euro 2012 and as he boasts the ability to slot into a midfield role when required, he ticks the versatility is box for coach Dick Advocaat.
“We look at the players in our squad and the opposition we will be up against in this tournament and there is every reason to be optimistic,” says Anyukov. “We have experience, some young players determined to shine and lots of quality. Maybe we can do even better than Euro 2008.”
Anyukov’s finest hour in a Zenit shirt came as he lifted the UEFA Cup back in 2008 and after impressing in this season’s Champions League, this former Krylia Sovetov should be well equipped to deal with everything that is thrown at him in this Euro 2012 summer.
