It was not until Toivonen found his way to Malmo that his career began to lift off, with his early forays at Degerfors and Orgryte suggesting he had the potential to become a star with some careful nurturing.
There is no doubting his quality as he heads in Euro 2012, with his contribution to Sweden’s qualifying push confirming he has a big role to play in this side as a wide player offering great support to lead strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Johan Elmander, who owe their place in this summer’s final to this man in many ways.
It was a Toivonen winning goal against Netherlands last October that proved decisive in Sweden’s passage as the best place runner-up in the group stages and he will be hoping to repeat some of those heroics this summer.
“It feels as if we have been given a welcoming draw for the group stages of this competition, but we have to make the most of that break,” Toivonen says. “My goal to take Sweden into the finals was an amazing moment in my career. Hopefully there are more great moments to come in Euro 2012.”
