Spain full-back Alvaro Arbeloa is a major fitness doubt for his side's Euro 2012 opener against Italy on Sunday, having missed training on Tuesday with a back injury.

In what was Spain's first session at their Gdansk base, the Real Madrid defender was forced to sit out proceedings - meaning that coach Vicente del Bosque may have to call upon the inexperienced Juanfran.

Arbeloa had been expected to start the tournament as Spain's first choice right-back, after a fine season at club level for Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid full-back Juanfran, who impressed greatly on his debut against Serbia last week, could be in line to win only his second cap in the Group C clash.
