Rafael van der Vaart is hopeful his display in Netherlands’ win over Slovakia has given manager Bert van Marwijk food for thought.
Tottenham forward Van der Vaart has been forced to play second fiddle to Wesley Sneijder in his preferred second-striker role. Sneijder limped out of the win over Slovakia with an ankle knock – allowing Van der Vaart the chance to shine.
He did not disappoint, scoring one goal and also hitting the woodwork, and he is hopeful he did enough to put himself in contention for when the Dutch kick off their Euro 2012 campaign against Denmark on June 9.
“Every minute I see as an opportunity," Van der Vaart said. "The coach has always chosen Wesley in my position, so I have not played there a lot lately. When you start on the bench, you always hope to be given enough time to be able to prove yourself. Luckily that happened."
