Howedes has been at Schalke since the age of 13 and after making his debut for their first team in a Champions League match in October 2007, he is rapidly emerging as a leader of the next generation of German internationals.
Despite his relatively tender age, he has captained Schalke and confirmed his potential in the central defensive position, making his debut for the full national team against Uruguay in May 2011. He went on to play in four Euro 2012 qualifiers and will be hoping to make his major tournament bow this summer.
“I could play in a full-back role if the coach asked me, but it would take some adjustment,” says Howedes, who was a member of Germany’s under-21 European Championship winning team in 2009. “The competition for places in the centre of the defence is strong, so I will do whatever the coach asks of me. Playing in Euro 2012 is my next big ambition.”
