This stopper has been unfortunate to find himself in the same era as Petr Cech, with the Chelsea keeper ensuring Drobny’s international career has been a tale of patient bench warming. That story is likely to continue this summer, even though Drobny has seen plenty of first team action in the Bundesliga this season.
A well-travelled keeper who has finally found a home for his talents in Germany with Hertha Berlin after a 2007 move that has served to enhance his reputation, he lists Panionios, Fulham and Ipswich among his former clubs.
He has been prone to the odd error in Hamburg colours this season and it seems his hopes of glory for the Czech Republic are not burning brightly. “The expectation from the media and the supporters is still massive in our country, but the reality is we are in a transitional period and we should expect so much at Euro 2012,” says Drobny. “The days of us being near the top of the FIFA rankings are gone for now.”
