The battle for the Russian No.1 jersey has been something of a confused affair in the run-up to Euro 2012 and Shunin believes he is well placed to stake a claim for a starting spot in this summer’s football festival.
“I need to prove the nation and the manager that I am a deserving candidate for a place in the starting composition. Russia have a decent chance to reach the later stages with the group stage draw we have been given and I want to help them get there,” says Shunin, who fought off competition from Vladimir Gabulov (Rubin Kazan) and Sergei Ryzhikov (Anzhi) for a place in the final 23-man Russian squad selected by Dick Advocaat.
This Dynamo Moscow keeper won the 2008 Russian league title with his current employers and he is noted as a fins shot stopper. He has spent his entire career with the capital city club.
