Sami Khedira

Khedira has seen plenty of game time under Jose Mourinho’s guidance in the Spanish capital over the last couple of seasons, as this holding midfielder has slotted neatly into the more compact set-up employed the Real Madrid boss.

The move to Spain came after his impressive displays at the 2010 World Cup finals, as a refreshingly vibrant Germany side took the competition by storm and so nearly made it all the way. Khedira filled the role left vacant by the absent Michael Ballack and did the job with aplomb.

“It feels like we have all developed as players and as a team since the last World Cup,” states Khedira, whose relationship with TV star and model Lena Gercke has captured headlines in Germany.

“From my perspective, I feel like a more complete player now and it may not take much for us to make the step from being close two years ago to something better now. None of us want to come up just short again in a big tournament.”

Strengths: Has great stamina, a good range of passing and impressive technique on the ball.

Weaknesses: Doesn't shine as much as others in his team and has trouble changing a game on his own.

Career high: Winning the Bundesliga in 2007 in his first season in the first XI.

Career low: Beaten by Spain in the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Style: Industrious, commited, a box-to-box midfielder.

Quotes: "Obviously you don't gladly let such a leading player and figure like Sami Khedira leave, but on the other hand, we could understand Sami's desire to continue his career with Real." Stuttgart's director of sport Fredi Bobic.

Trivia: Sami's younger brother Rani plays for the youth ranks of VfB Stuttgart and is a member of the Germany Under-15 team.
