Besiktas midfielder Manuel Fernandes was thought to be a more likely inclusion in the final Portugal squad than defensive midfielder Custodio, but this Braga man’s ability to block up a midfield and disrupt the opposition may be useful against some of the big hitters Portugal are set to come up against this summer.
Previously with Sporting Lisbon, Dynamo Moscow and Vitoria de Guimaraes, he impressed in Braga colours in the second half of the Portuguese league season and clearly impressed national team coach Paulo Bento.
“I don’t think it is a surprise to see Custodio’s name in the final squad,” argues the Portugal boss. He does a great job for his club team and we see him as someone who can be useful for us at Euro 2012.”
