One of the leading lights of the Dutch national team, Mathijsen played in all ten of his nation’s Euro 2012 qualifiers and he is certain to be one of the first names of coach Bert van Marwijk team-sheet if he is fit and healthy this summer.
Listing Willem II, AZ Alkmaar and Hamburg among his former clubs, this experience central defender moved to Malaga in the summer of 2011, even though there were doubts over his fitness after he suffered a nasty ankle injury while playing for Holland against Turkey a couple of years ago.
Very much an unsung hero of this Dutch side, he is fully appreciated by the man that matters most. “We know what Mathijsen brings to a team and part of the reason why we are having success is because of our solid and settled defence,” says Holland boss Van Marwijk. “You need leaders at the back and Joris is in that category.”
