Josip Simunic

This stalwart of the Croatia national team made his senior debut back in 2001, after he turned down the chance to commit his international future to Australia, the country of his berth.

He has done his Croatian parents proud in the last 11 years, making his way into the 2002 World Cup squad, as well as performing at Euro 2004 and Euro 2008. It was during the 2006 World Cup finals that he shot to worldwide prominence, as he was given three yellow cards by hapless English referee Graham Poll before finally being sent-off in tournament match against Australia.

Simunic’s club career has taken him from Australia’s Melbourne Knights to Hamburg in Germany, before he settled at the Hertha Berlin, where he performed superbly for nine years.

A stint at Hoffenheim preceded his move to Dinamo Zagreb last August and this cultured centre-back can be relied upon to shine at Euro 2012, after starring in nine of Croatia’s qualifying ties.
