Manuel Neuer

Arguably the finest goalkeeper in world football, Neuer has filled the void left by Oliver Kahn both in the German national team and the Bayern Munich side with some class.

Initially hailed as an unpopular signing when he joined Bayern in the summer of 2011, the animosity towards Neuer soon dispersed once this former Schalke stopper started turning on the style between the sticks for the Munich club. Agile, alert and with fine anticipation, he is a stopper who has it all.

Neuer established himself as the Germany No.1 following the tragic death of Robert Enke in 2009 and an injury to Rene Adler. After his impressive displays at the 2010 World Cup finals, his reputation as a rock solid final line of defence was established.

He played in all ten of Germany’s Euro 2012 qualifiers, with his display in the away win against Turkey last October building on his already solid reputation. “Neuer is the best in the world,” states former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel. “Iker Casillas used to be the No.1, but that is no longer the case.”

Strengths: Neuer's impressive reflexes make him a shot-stopper of real repute but his excellent distribution also ensures he is an offensive threat.

Weaknesses: He could be a more commanding presence in his own box, though Neuer has worked hard on this aspect of his game in recent times.

Career high: Being named his country's No. 1 goalkeeper for the 2010 World Cup finals as Germany impressed en route to a semi-final defeat at the hands of eventual champions Spain.

Career low: A 5-0 hammering at the hands of Kaiserlautern in November 2010 that compounded a desperately poor start to the season for Schalke.

Style: Enthusiastic, accomplished, dynamic. The model of a modern goalkeeper.

Quotes: "Of course, we would be able to sell him for a vast sum of money. But we would not be able to pick up any equal replacement afterwards". Schalke manager Felix Magath, December 2010.

Trivia: Neuer's idol is former Schalke, Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
