Pontus Wernbloom

IFK Gothenburg provided Wernbloom with the platform to launch his professional career and, after a spell with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, he made his way to the Russian league last January.

He certainly made his mark in his first few weeks in Moscow, as it was his dramatic late goal that gave CSKA an unlikely first leg draw against Real Madrid in the first knockout round of the Champions League. While his new side eventually lost that high profile tie, Wernbloom had announced his arrival in the grand manner.

Wernbloom emerged as a key man in Sweden’s Euro 2012 qualifying push as he played in eight ties, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win against Hungary in September 2010 that proved so crucial in the final analysis of the group. Full of energy, feisty in the tackle and with the ability to chip in with the odd vital goal, coach Erik Hamren knows this is a performer he can rely on this summer.
