Poulsen has long seen himself as a midfielder with attacking invention, yet many of the coaches he has worked under believe he is better employed in a right full-back role, which is where he made his initial breakthrough for club and country.
National team boss Morten Olsen appeared to share that view for some time until an injury to Martin Jorgensen handed him a route to the Denmark starting line-up and he made a good impression, going on to play a key part in his side’s qualification for the 2010 World Cup finals.
His role during the Euro 2012 qualifiers was a little more peripheral once again, as he made just two appearances on the road to this summer’s finals, which suggests this former Heerenveen and AGF star and may be in for a spell on bench warming when the action gets underway.
