Portugal boss Paulo Bento made Pereira one of his first call-ups when he took over as Portugal national team boss, with his faith in this full-back built up during his time working alongside him at Sporting Lisbon.
He ended up playing in eight of Portugal’s Euro 2012 qualifiers and while international football has come somewhat late in his career, he has warmed to the challenge superbly under the guidance of a coach who has so much faith in his abilities.
Listing Benfica and Braga among his former employers, he has edged ahead of Chelsea’s Jose Bosingwa for a place in the Portugal starting line-up and that should mean he sees some action in his first major tournament at international level this summer.
