The injury suffered to centre-back Daniel Majstorovic has opened the door to Sweden’s Euro 2012 line-up for Olsson and the Premier League star will be keen to snatch his chance and nail down a spot in Erik Hamren’s team.
He has been at West Brom since joining from NEC Nijmegen in 2008 and is the kind of performer who gets on with his job without claiming too many plaudits. However, any manager he works for will confirm his calm composure is worth its weight in gold.
A newcomer to the international set-up, he won his first cap shortly after Hamren took over as national team coach and he is emerging as something of a television star thanks to his work on Swedish TV’s football coverage.
Olsson is hardly your average footballer, as he has already spoken about becoming a human rights lawyer when he hangs up his boots, but those plans will not be in his mind in this Euro 2012 summer.
