Even though he did not feature during Portugal’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, centre-back Costa earned a place in the final 23-man squad named by coach Paulo Bento and he will provide reliable back-up to the first picks who will start this summer.
A German title winner with Wolfsburg in 2009, he won a host of major titles with FC Porto and he heads into this tournament having enjoyed a decent run of form in the Valencia side at the back end of their La Liga and Europa League campaigns.
He boasts Champions League experience to add to an international career that saw him collect his first cap back in 2005, but there seems little chance of him seeing any Euro 2012 action unless Pepe or Bruno Alves suffer an injury set-back this summer.
