João Moutinho

Moutinho is a gifted footballer who has a growing reputation as one of Europe's brightest midfielders. After beginning his development as a youngster at Portimonense, Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon swooped for his services in 1999 when he was 13 years of age.

He continued to progress at Sporting, alongside the likes of Miguel Veloso and Nani, before pushing for a first team berth during the 2004-05 season. The youngster grabbed his opportunity to impress with both hands, and soon became a key player for the club.

After over a decade with Sporting, Moutinho caused controversy by pursuing a move away from the club. And, to make matters worse, he ultimately left in 2010 for league rivals Porto, signing a five-year contract for around £10 million.

The switch proved the right decision for Moutinho as he won the Portuguese league title during his debut season at Porto. Indeed, the 2010-11 campaign proved an outstanding one for the player and his new side as they claimed a treble, after lifting the Europa League and Portuguese Cup.

Moutinho made his international debut for Portugal at the age of 18 and has been a regular in the side since the 2006 World Cup, proving a key creative force for his nation.

Strengths: Moutinho is a technically gifted player, boasting high-end composure on the ball and pin-point passing.

Weaknesses: He is not the strongest or fastest of players, while his lack of height means he is a liability in the air.

Career high: Being named the second youngest captain in the history of Sporting.

Career low: Being on the receiving end of an embarrassing 12-1 Champions League against Bayern Munich in 2008-09 season.

Style: Neat and tidy on the ball, hard-working and capable of playing anywhere in midfield as well as behind the striker.

Quotes: "If I had not experienced the situation, I would not believe it was possible to descend so low". Sporting chairman Jose Eduardo Bettencourt on Moutinho's move from Sporting to Porto, July 2010.

Trivia: In 2008, it was reported that Everton had failed with an £11.8 million bid for Moutinho.
