Jetro Willems was something of a wildcard pick in Holland’s 23-man Euro 2012 squad and the other surprise name on coach Bert van Marwijk’s list was that of Bouma.
With an ability to perform well at full-back or in a central defensive role, it may have been that his versatility was a factor that appealed to the Dutch head coach, yet this former Aston Villa star was hardly a name on the tip of anyone’s tongue in the run up to this tournament.
A serious ankle injury severely affected his spell in the English Premier League with Villa and while he has been in decent form with PSV over the last couple of years, this veteran of the Euro 2004 Holland squad would not have been expecting to spend his summer on international duty.
“It’s never easy selecting a final 23-man line-up and leaving players out is one of the toughest tasks we have as international managers,” states Van Marwijk. “I have a duty to pick a squad that cover all eventualities and this is why Bouma is included.”
