The sight of Schmeichel’s name on Denmark’s Euro 2012 squad list evoked memories of their gloriously unexpected Euro’92 victory, when this young man’s legendary father led his nation to their greatest triumph on the international stage.
Schmeichel Jnr has done well to emerge from his father’s iconic shadow and after making his way through the ranks at Manchester City, he had spells at Notts County and Leeds before finding his way to Leicester last summer. He played every Championship game for the Foxes last season.
Agile, athletic and clearly benefitting from the footballing great giving him advice on every step of his career, the time when Schmeichel is a name back on the Denmark team-sheet consistently may not be far away.
However, he will have to content himself with bench warming duties at Euro 2012, after receiving a late call-up following the injury suffered to first choice keeper Thomas Sorensen.
