Katsouranis will forever be a part of Greece football folklore after his contribution to their remarkable Euro 2004 win and he will head into this summer’s tournament believing an improbable repeat is possible.
This reliable performer was typically efficient during the Euro 2012 qualifiers, missing only one of his nation’s games en-route to another successful push towards a major tournament and he has been in decent form at club level this season, even though Panathinakos came up short in their bid to land yet another Greek title this term.
He was an AEK Athens player when he shot to stardom in the summer of 2004, with his displays at the finals in Portugal eventually earning him a move to Benfica a couple of years later. He thrived for a time in the Portuguese league, before returning home with in 2009.
“Did anyone expect us to progress past the first round at Euro 2004?” questions Katsouranis. “Clearly no-one gave us a chance then and the same is true eight years on, even though we finished top of a tough qualifying group. Once more, we have the quality of team spirit, which is stronger than anything in this game.”
