Greece coach Fernando Santos was keen to sprinkle a touch of youthful exuberance through his squad and in 19-year-old Fortounis, he has made a selection with one eye on the future of the Greek national team.
He only made his senior debut in February after impressing with the Greek under-21 side and has shown himself to be a dangerous operator on the flank, offering pace and invention that is as promising as it is raw.
His time as a national team regular may not have arrived just yet, but few doubt Fortounis has a bright future ahead of him and he will look to prove as much if he is released from his captivity on the substitutes’ bench at Euro 2012.
