The injury problems affecting Willems’s club team mate Erik Pieters participation in Euro 2012 opened a door for a re-shaped left-back set-up in the Dutch side and while Willems is unlikely to be handed a start, he will benefit from the experience of being a part of his first major championship as a senior international.
“I like the potential of Willems and have no doubt that he can be ready to play if needed,” states Holland coach Van Marwijk. “Young players do not show any fear when they are put in a difficult position. That is a good quality to have.”
