Manager Glenn Hoddle believed he had snapped up one of the brightest stars in European football when he brought Postiga to Tottenham from Porto in 2003, yet the step onto the Premier League stage came a little too early for this diminutive striker to make his mark.
His return to Porto ended his misery in north London and yet he did not spring into life for club and country once his home comforts were back in touching distance. Indeed, it was not until he moved to Sporting Lisbon in 2008 that Postiga started to show signs of life once again and he has scored the odd spectacular goal for Real Zaragoza in La Liga this season.
His form in Portugal’s Euro 2012 qualifying push was impressive, with five goals in his eight appearances ensuring he would be in Paulo Bento’s final squad for this tournament. His two goals in the play-off against Bosnia & Herzegovina helped to ease some Portuguese nerves on a night of high scoring action in Lisbon.
