After making his name in the game with FC Midtjylland, Poulsen made his way to AZ Alkmaar in January 2008, where he was converted from a winger into a full-back - a move that has seen his career for club and country move onto a new level.
His international call came as a winger in 2007, but he had become an established defensive star by the time he took centre-stage at the 2010 World Cup finals, where he was involved in a bizarre own goal that was eventually credited to team-mate Daniel Agger in a game against Netherlands.
Not a first pick during the Euro 2012 qualifiers, he only started two matches and played a cameo role in the crucial qualifier against Group H rivals Portugal last October. With experience on his side, boss Olsen knows he is a man who should produce reliable displays if required this summer.
