Greece coach Fernando Santos has looked to blood a few younger players during his time as national team boss, with Papadopoulos emerging as one of his most promising starlets.
Playing in four Euro 2012 qualifiers and scoring vital goals, including a valuable equaliser against Latvia last September, this central defender is also at home in a holding midfield position and his reputation as one of the rising stars of Greek football has caught the attention of many a scout in the last couple of years.
Top-flight Spanish clubs were among those linked with a move for Papadopoulos during his formative days at Olympiakos, where he became youngest ever player to appear in the Greek League at 15 years and 283 days.
Germany was to be his destination of choice as he looked to propel his career by signing for Schalke in 2010. He has been a regular in their first team this season and has the class to raise his profile still further at Euro 2012 this summer.
