Something of a surprise late pick for this Seleccao squad, Varela was hardly in scintillating form at club level this season as he only managed to bag four goals in FC Porto’s title winning success.
His inclusion has been condemned by some as proof that this Portugal side lack the attacking strength in depth to cope if captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo fails to fire their burners, yet Varela believes his role at Euro 2012 can be more than just a watching brief from the bench.
“Not many people believed I had a chance to make this squad, but the coach sees something in me and now I have to try and reward him for that faith,” says Varela, who was one of seven attack minded players named in the Portugal squad.
