Fernando Torres’s troubles at Chelsea gave Negredo real incentive to push for a place in Spain’s Euro 2012 squad and now he will want to prove he has what it takes to shine on the big tournament stage.
After starting his career at Rayo Vallecano, he moved to his hometown club Real Madrid, but struggled to find his way into their first team as the competition for places proved too much for him. A successful spell with Almeria preceded his move to Valencia in 2009 and he has been a consistent scorer since that move.
Negredo’s international debut came shortly after his move to Valencia, but he will be keen to make his mark in a major tournament this summer after missing out on selection for Spain’s memorable 2010 World Cup triumph.
After scoring twice in his only Euro 2012 qualifier, he staked his claim for a place in the final squad and now comes the challenge of confirming his worth as an international goal getter when it matters most.
