This Russian squad has featured many of the same faces for an extended period of time now and Ignashevich is one of those who have lived through the highs and lows of his national team’s plotline for the last decade.
After making his international debut in 2002, this central defender has been a rock solid member of the Russia side in the years since, yet his participation in Euro 2012 was in doubt after he broke a toe while training with his club side back in April. “It is the worst possible timing for me and I cannot imagine not being able to play at Euro 2012,” said Ignashevich as he contemplated a summer watching this tournament on television.
A UEFA Cup winner in 2005, he likes to shoot from distance and is also a threat when he moves forward to take part in set pieces. An unsung hero who rarely steals the spotlight, his importance to the Russian side should not be under-estimated.
