Skipper Mark van Bommel has decided to retire from international football following Netherlands' group stage exit from Euro 2012 - though suggested he would reverse that decision if he is needed in the future.

Van Bommel, 35, was left out of the final group game against Portugal by coach and father-in-law Bert van Marwijk, meaning his appearance in the previous match against Germany was his 79th and final cap.

The former AC Milan midfielder, who returns home to play for PSV Eindhoven next season, said it was time to let younger players come through into the national team.

"Perhaps there will come a time when the coach needs or wants me in the future. Then I want to be there," he said. "The Dutch team will always be dear to me, but for now it is time for talented young players. They are there and must now develop at the highest level."
