Steven Gerrard feels England have done their homework and are ready to put Sweden to the sword in Kiev on Friday.

England opened their Euro 2012 campaign with a 1-1 draw with France, meaning they have to go on the attack in their remaining Group D games with Sweden and Ukraine.

Oleg Blokhin’s Ukraine opened up Sweden with two headed goals and it would appear that is an area England will look to exploit. It is believed that Andy Carroll will be handed a start, which will beef up England’s attack, and Gerrard is looking for the side to step on the gas.

“We can attack more and maybe take slightly more risks,” Gerrard said. “Then you will see a better performance going forward from the team.

“We have watched tapes of Sweden and seen their weaknesses. I think we have the players to exploit those weaknesses.”

England produced a disciplined effort against France and Gerrard has defended the performance, claiming they can adjust their tactics if needed.

“Of course we want to be more entertaining,” Gerrard said. “But you have to understand, you can’t approach some of these teams and go all-out attacking and gung-ho. Otherwise you will get beaten and go out of the tournament very early.

“If you are not organised and tight ­defensively and sacrifice ­something ­going forward you go home early.

“More importantly, the team needs to be solid and together. That is the major ­positive to take from the first game, rather than lacking ambition going forward.”
