Ukraine manager Oleg Blokhin has said the food poisoning that has struck ten members of his squad “cannot be accidental”.

The players suffered the illness ahead of a friendly defeat against Turkey in Germany on Tuesday, with Bayern Munich’s Anatoly Tymoshchuk having to be put on a drip and Dynamo Kiev midfielder Denys Garmash having to have his stomach cleaned.

"It happened in Germany, but it is impossible to establish the causes - all ate different food," Blokhin said. "It may have been sabotage, I do not know. It cannot be accidental."

The Euro 2012 co-hosts play their first game of the tournament against Sweden on Monday and it looks likely that the affected players will recover in time.

Team spokesman Oleksander Glyvinsky said: "They were out running this morning, so we would expect that they will all be fine for the opening game against Sweden.”

Andriy Shevchenko and Andriy Voronin were among the other players to have been taken ill.
