Juventus and Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini has assured supporters that he will be fit for Euro 2012, even if he needs to sit out the two warm-up friendly encounters.
Chiellini, 27, picked up a thigh strain in Juventus’ final Serie A game of the season, with doctors ruling him out of action for 20 days.
Juventus’ defence conceded just 20 goals in 38 games this season, with Chiellini prominent, but the defender was absent for this weekend’s Coppa Italia final defeat to Napoli.
“I will be ready at the right time. If I don't take part in the two friendly games prior to the tournament then it will be as a precautionary measure. I want to be ready to take on Spain on June 10 and I will be,” Chiellini told reporters.
The defender was included in the preliminary Italy squad for the European Championship, with the final squad to be named on May 28. Italy boss Cesare Prandelli has insisted that no unfit player will be included in his final squad.
“We have been very clear with all the players,'' Prandelli said. “We cannot allow to take players that are not 100% fit because we don't have the time for them to recover.”
Italy begin their Euro 2012 campaign against Spain, before taking on Group C rivals Croatia on June 14 and the Republic of Ireland on June 18.
