Greece coach Fernando Santos has named the 12 foreign-based players who will likely be part of his 23-man squad for Euro 2012.

Santos will name 13 more players on May 17 - all locally based - before cutting two names from his preliminary squad ahead of this summer’s tournament.

APOEL goalkeeper Dionisis Chiotis has been called up after the 34-year-old played a starring role in the Cypriot minnows’ fairytale run to the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. Fellow shot-stopper Alexandros Tzorvas of Palermo has also been included despite a disappointing debut season in Serie A.

Kaiserslauten team-mates Athanasios Petsos and Kostas Fortounis have both been handed places in the preliminary squad, with Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Georgios Tzavellas the other Germany-based players included.

There was no place for Schalke’s Vasileios Pliatsikas, who has spent the season on-loan at MSV Duisburg, nor Everton’s Apostolos Vellios, who has shown flashes of his potential in the English Premier League this season.

Veterans Theofanis Gekas, Georgios Samaras, Alexandros Tziolis and Vangelis Moras have also been chosen by Santos, along with Brescia’s Panagiotis Kone, who was loaned out to Bologna.
