Antonio Conte: 100 points 'impossible' to obtain in Premier League

LONDON -- Antonio Conte believes it would be "impossible" for any team to break the 100-point barrier in the Premier League because the division is too competitive and results are too difficult to manage.

Jose Mourinho's first great Chelsea team set the record for Premier League points when claiming the club's first league title for 50 years in the 2004-05 season, taking 95 from 38 matches, and no team has reached 90 since Manchester United in 2008-09.

Conte, who set the record for Serie A points with 102 in his final season at Juventus, does not think matching the achievement in England is feasible and insists that even Chelsea's current run of eight consecutive victories should be regarded as a rare and impressive feat.

"No, it's impossible," Conte said when asked if any team could break 100 points in the Premier League. "[Right] now it's impossible and in the future it will be very, very difficult because every single game [in this league] is very tough.

"To have won eight games in a row is fantastic. In every game you have to fight a lot. You can win 2-0 but it's very difficult also to manage the result in England. In other countries -- and also in Italy -- if you are 2-0 up with 15, 20 minutes [left] it's very difficult to change the result. You are able to manage it tactically."

Asked about Chelsea's record set under Mourinho, he added: "I think this number, 95, is a fantastic number. You can see in the past the title has been won with only 85, 87 points and it's very difficult to [reach] 90 points. For us it's important to see and to play game by game, not too far [ahead]."

Last season's champions Leicester City further underlined the strength of the Premier League with a 4-2 evisceration of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, and Conte says no one at Chelsea is underestimating the threat of eighth-placed West Brom.

"We must pay great attention because West Brom is a physical team, very good at set pieces with good technical players," Conte insisted. "For sure, this game will be very tough. They are doing very well [this season]."
