Manchester City's Pep Guardiola won't manage Barcelona again - father

Pep Guardiola's father does not envision his son coaching Barcelona again but has not ruled out the possibility of the Manchester City boss managing the Catalan national team in the future.

Guardiola returns to the Camp Nou on Wednesday to lead City against Barca in their Champions League group C showdown.

Guardiola had a long career as a player at Barca and also coached the club in four successful seasons from 2008 until 2012, steering the Blaugrana to three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

Asked about the possibility of his son returning one day to have a role at Barca, Valenti Guardiola told Cadena Ser radio: "Return to Barcelona? To do what, work as a ball boy?

"I really don't see him there either as president or on the bench. His time with Barca has come and gone. I don't think he would do well in going back.

"At the very least, I think we can rule him out coming back as coach."

Valenti does believe that the 45-year-old Guardiola, who played for Spain, would be tempted to lead the Catalan national team, which is not officially recognised by FIFA or UEFA.

Guardiola has been outspoken about his pro-independence stance.

"I say he could take the Catalan national team, but I don't see him coaching Spain," he said. "I'm not just saying that out of spite against someone, everyone is free to think what they want.

"But I don't know what he will do. He has had a good start so far [at City]."

Guardiola joined City this summer after three seasons coaching Bayern Munich and has guided the Blues to six wins and a draw in their first eight Premier League games.
