Manchester United's Phil Jones ruled out of England game with injury

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been released from the England squad to play Germany on Wednesday after suffering an injury in training, the Football Association has said.

Jones has returned to Old Trafford and will not join the England party for the game against Joachim Low's side in Dortmund.

England coach Gareth Southgate does not plan to call up a replacement ahead of the Germany match, the FA said.

However, with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill suspended for the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on Sunday, he will assess his options ahead of the Wembley meeting.

Jones, 25, had been hoping to make his first international appearance since November 2015 after an injury-hit period at Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling missed Tuesday's training session at St George's Park because he is on a personal recovery plan following Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, but there were no concerns about his condition.

Sterling was the only player absent from the session, in which uncapped James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond of Southampton were both involved.
