PSV dumped out of Europa League

PA Sport

PSV Eindhoven's dismal season took another blow on Thursday as they were dumped out of the Europa League with a 1-0 defeat to Chornomorets.

Needing just a draw to progress as runners-up to runaway Group B leaders Ludogrets, PSV missed a raft of chances and then conceded a winner to Franck Dja Djedje, sending Chornomorets through instead.

The loss came on the back of a 6-2 Eredivisie hammering by Vitesse and, having not won a game since October 6, they sit 10th in the table.

This defeat was all of their own doing, though, as they passed up numerous opportunities to score, with Memphis Depay the most guilty as his miss-list bordered on double figures and Sito Riera sent off in the 87th minute.

Despite only needing to hold what they had, PSV started on the front foot as Depay shot wide, while Jorrit Hendrix also had an effort blocked.

The Dutch side had a scare in the 16th minute as Olexiy Antonov broke through, only to find PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet equal to his effort.

Phillip Cocu's men responded with a barrage of their own, with Dmytro Bezotosnyi called into action three times in quick succession, with Depay and Hendrix (twice) frustrated in their pursuit of an opener.

Jurgen Locadia was the next PSV man to take aim to no avail and despite what felt like the maintenance of an all-out attack, they went in at the break level, with Depay and Hendrix again failing to make the most of opportunities.

That haunted them in the 59th minute too as Chornomorets took the lead.

Riera swung a cross in from the right and Dja Djedje was on the spot to drill a header beyond the helpless Jeroen Zoet.

Cocu's side returned to the front foot and the story remained the same, with Depay twice errant in front of goal, begging the question as to why Ola Toivonen remained on the bench.

The in-demand striker did make an appearance with 15 minutes to go but it was too late to make an impact and he could only look on as Depay missed yet more chances before Riera was shown a straight red card for violent conduct shortly before the final whistle.
