Sydney FC coach happy with improvement

Sydney FC coach Frank Farina was relatively pleased with how his side fought to draw 2-2 with Perth Glory, but is still looking for more improvement defensively.

The Glory dominated large parts of the Saturday night's game in Perth with Shane Smeltz scoring in each half to end his goal drought, but the Sky Blues refused to go away.

Experienced trio Alessandro Del Piero, Brett Emerton and Jason Culina provided outstanding leadership and combined for the first goal scored by Culina, and then Del Piero set up Seb Ryall for the equaliser.

Sydney did well to limit the Glory to just two goals despite their dominance in possession and territory.

Goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic was outstanding while the defence, led by goal scorer Ryan, stood up well all night.

While Farina saw signs of improvement defensively, he would like to see more.

"The problem is we are still conceding goals. It was a better performance from us defensively, but we still conceded two goals.

"You'd like to think if you came to Perth and scored two goals you would go away with three points, but conceding too many goals is still an issue.

"They were better in the first half and we were better in the second, and both teams had some good chances so 2-2 was a fair result. I'm happy with the point although it doesn't really help us too much."

Meanwhile, Glory coach Ian Ferguson was pleased to have Smeltz back on the scoresheet with his brace after having just two previous goals this season but he was left disappointed not to get the full three points at home.

"It's always disappointing not to take three points at home as much as the dominance was, but credit to them for coming back in the second half and causing us some problems," Ferguson said.

"I was pleased for Smeltzy. There's a lot of people making noises about his scoring records, but he doesn't need to prove anything here. He is a goal scorer and proved that again.

"The pressure was on him and people were giving him a hard time, but he stepped up and answered them by coming up with two cracking goals."
