Ajaccio got their season off to a winning start with 10 men as they claimed a narrow victory away to Nice this evening.
Brazilian forward Eduardo got the Corsicans in front in the 10th minute when he turned home a cross from Sigamary Diarra, and the visitors survived almost the entire second half with 10 men following the dismissal of Mehdi Mostefa.
The closest Nice came was when Fabian Monzon's 71st-minute penalty struck the crossbar.
Nice created the first opening when Monzon crossed for Thimothee Kolodzieczak in the third minute and he fired a shot just over the bar.
Ajaccio responded five minutes later as Samuel Bouhours headed over following a corner, and in the 10th minute they gained the lead as Eduardo applied the finishing touch to Diarra's expert delivery.
Diarra almost got on the scoresheet himself but hit the bar with a 30-yard free-kick in the 41st minute.
Mostefa was dismissed within seconds of the restart for a foul on Nice midfielder Eric Bautheac.
Nice seized the initiative and Alexy Bosetti's cross found Franck Dja Djedje at the near post in the 51st minute, but his shot was parried wide by Guillermo Ochoa in the Ajaccio goal.
Yoann Poulard tripped Bosetti in the box with 70 minutes played but Monzon could not apply the full punishment as his spot-kick hit the woodwork.
He went close again three minutes later with a free-kick which shaved Ochoa's post and the Mexican goalkeeper was then able to keep out a 30-yard drive from Didier Digard with 10 minutes left as Ajaccio held on.
