Palermo 1-0 Genoa
Palermo broke into the top 10 in Serie A tonight thanks to a win over Genoa at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.
Mauricio Pinilla missed a hatful of chances before scoring the winner for the Rosaneri in the 42nd minute.
The Sicilians dominated the game, despite only finding the back of the net once, and deservedly took three points on the night Fabrizio Miccoli made his first appearance of the season.
Pinilla put them ahead in the 42nd minute after a frustrating half up to that point.
His first chance came in the 12th minute when his shot was deflected onto the outside of the post.
He was then denied by a magnificent one-handed save by Genoa goalkeeper Eduardo as he tried to take the ball round him in a one-on-one situation.
Pinilla hit the post again in the 24th minute with a header which had beaten Eduardo, but bounced out across the face of his goal.
Once again, Pinilla missed a one-on-one with Eduardo, this time lifting his shot just wide of the far post in the 32nd minute.
His header straight at Eduardo from eight yards in the 41st minute saw him hit the post again, albeit this time without the ball as he kicked the woodwork in frustration.
The fans inside the Renzo Barbera called his name to offer encouragement, and he responded a minute later, shooting past Eduardo into the far corner after receiving the ball from a neat Javier Pastore backheel.
It was the least Pinilla and Palermo deserved at the end of a pulsating first half from the Sicilians.
However, despite their superiority, they only carried a slender lead into the second half in which Genoa grew in confidence and went close to an equaliser 10 minutes from time when a neat move involving Mattia Destro and Luca Toni tore apart the Palermo defence and culminated in Miguel Veloso shooting straight at Salvatore Sirigu from eight yards.
