Manuel Pellegrini continued his winning start as new coach of Malaga after guiding the Andalusian side to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Levante in his league debut.
Eliseu Pereira struck the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute as Malaga picked up their first home points of the season after five successive league defeats at La Rosaleda.
The victory also lifted Malaga off the foot of the standings and up to 17th pale, and made it two wins out of two for Pellegrini since he replaced Jesualdo Ferreira just over a week ago.
Pellegrini only had a watching brief a week ago as Malaga slumped to a 1-0 loss at Espanyol - their seventh defeat in 10 games - but he made his debut in the hotseat for Thursday`s Copa del Rey clash against Hercules, when a last-minute goal place new side to a 3-2 victory and a place in the last 16 of the competition.
Malaga can consider themselves slightly fortunate to have claimed all three points today, though, as Levante did enough to deserve at least a draw.
The visitors created the best two chances of the first half, with Felipe Caicedo involved in both.
He contrived to head over from three yards out for the first before then charging down Malaga goalkeeper Francesc Arnau`s attempted clearance and unluckily seeing the ball land on the roof of the net.
The Valencia-based side went even closer at the start of the second half when Valmiro Valdo saw his diving header hit the crossbar.
Malaga responded by hitting the woodwork themselves, Jesus Gamez`s header being tipped onto the post by Manuel Reina, before the hosts took the lead with a fine strike from Eliseu.
The Malaga forward picked the ball up on the right-hand side of the pitch, drove infield before unleashing a thunderous 25-yard shot that whistled past Reina at his left-hand post.
That proved to be the winning goal, although Levante almost snatched a last-gasp equaliser through Valdo.
Soon after Reina had kept his side in the match with a fine save to deny Edinho, Valdo escaped from his marker to get onto the end of a free-kick but Francesc Arnau managed to tip his header onto the underside of the crossbar and earn his side the win.
