Argentina do just enough, but scare no one
An improved second half performance from Argentina cemented them in third position in the South American qualifying group.
After a forgettable first half, in which both teams had credible penalty claims waved away by the referee, Argentinian coach Diego Maradona changed his side's formation, reverting to four at the back, and was rewarded with an improved display.
The crucial goal came after 55 minutes. Juan Sebastian Veron's corner wasn't cleared, and centre back Daniel Alberto Diaz, lurking at the back post, kept his cool to volley into the roof of the net from eight yards.
Although Colombia had two good chances to level which they failed to take, the home side just about deserved their victory. They were, though, fortunate that captain Javier Mascherano remained on the pitch, escaping a booking for a cynical foul when he had already been carded.
