HAMBURG, February 10 (Bundesliga) - Hamburg breathed a collective sigh of relief on Saturday, beating 10-man Borussia Dortmund for their first home victory of the season and their first win since late October.
Rafael van der Vaart scored from the penalty spot after 11 minutes, Collin Benjamin doubled the lead 29 minutes later and Mehdi Mahdavikia made it 3-0 in the dying seconds for Huub Stevens, who won his first game since replacing Thomas Doll as Hamburg coach.
Dortmund played the final 48 minutes a man down after Dede was sent off.
Hamburghus beat Dortmund at home for the first time since 1997.
The northern Germans had led eight times 1-0 this season - including the previous four games - but were unable to win any while their only previous three-point haul this season came at Bayer Leverkusen in October.
Despite Stevens' side finally collecting a victory after a league-high 12 draws, Hamburg remained cellar-dwellars in the league - two points from a non-relegation spot.
Jurgen Rober's Dortmund side came into the game with plenty of problems since beating Bayern Munich to start the second half of the season, losing 1-0 against Stuttgart and Mainz.
But Dortmund nearly pulled ahead just three minutes in as Hamburg defender Thimothee Atouba failed to push up and allowed Florian Kringe to beat the offside trap but the Cameroon defender redeemed himself to clear the danger.
Hamburg's first chance came four minutes later as Juan Pablo Sorin was alone in front of Roman Weidenfeller's goal but the Argentinian lacked the finishing touch.
And Stevens' team grabbed the lead after 11 minutes through Van der Vaart's penalty to the lower right corner.
Weidenfeller was penalised for taking down Mahdavikia in the box, but the Iranian appeared to dive.
Dortmund had two chances to equalise just after the half-hour mark, but Frank Rost blocked Kringe's volley and Nelson Valdez's attempt on the rebound.
Hamburg doubled the advantage five minutes before the break through Benjamin, who found himself at the end of Van der Vaart's deflected blast into the box and headed the ball past Weidenfeller.
Dortmund lost Dede three minutes before half-time when he caught David Jarolim.
Neither team really created many chances early in the second half, and Mahdavikia should have made 3-0 in the 73rd minute, running onto a free ball on the right side but unable to beat Weidenfeller with a low weak shot.
Mahdavikia secured the points after collecting a pass following a poor attempted clearance by Weidenfeller.
