Empoli appoint former player Giovanni Martusciello as their new head coach

Empoli have confirmed Giovanni Martusciello as their new head coach following the departure of Marco Giampaolo at the end of the season.

Empoli finished 10th in Giampaolo's first and only season in charge, but he confirmed prior to the Azzurri's final game of the campaign that he would be stepping down after reaching a "tacit agreement" with the club.

New manager Martusciello steps up from assistant coach to take charge at the club where he made over 100 appearances as a midfielder during his playing career.

"Empoli FC announces that it has entrusted the running of the first team to Giovanni Martusciello," a statement on the club's website said.

"The coach will be presented to the press tomorrow, Friday May 27."

Martusciello has been assistant manager at Empoli since 2010, working under five different head coaches in that time.
