D.C. United gives striker Patrick Mullins big new contract

D.C. United gave striker Patrick Mullins a new contract on Monday that reportedly doubles what he was making a year ago.

MLS teams do not disclose salaries, but The Washington Post reported that Mullins would now be earning a base salary of $250,000 in 2017 and $260,000 in 2018.

That's a significant increase from the $96,250 in base salary and $126,250 in total compensation that Mullins made last year, according to figures released by the MLS players' union.

The new deal also includes a club option for 2019 that would pay Mullins $310,000, the Post reported.

Mullins, 25, scored eight goals with two assists in 14 games for D.C. last season after he moved from New York City FC.

In July, D.C. got Mullins in a three-team trade, sending designated player Fabian Espindola to the Vancouver Whitecaps, who immediately sold the Argentine to Liga MX side Necaxa.

"Patrick is a player who had a major breakout after we traded for him last summer," United's general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. "His work ethic on both sides of the ball, positional awareness, and nose for the goal affect the outcome of games week after week.

"Securing Patrick's future is another big step for the club, and we look forward to his contributions this season and beyond."
