Terrence Boyd eager to work under Torsten Frings at Darmstadt

United States international Terrence Boyd said he is looking forward to working under Darmstadt coach Torsten Frings.

Boyd joined Darmstadt this week from Leipzig on an 18-month contract.

"Torsten Frings called me. As a Bremen-born this was a small honour," the 25-year-old said about the former Werder Bremen and Germany midfielder.

The U.S. attacker hopes to revive his career after a frustrating spell at the up-and-coming Bundesliga side which was hampered by knee injuries.

Prior to his move to the bottom club in Bundesliga, Boyd was linked with a switch to Huddersfield Town where his former coach at Borussia Dortmund's reserves, David Wagner, is leading the Wagner Revolution.

Speaking about his transfer on Wednesday, Boyd said that his move was also down to the new Darmstadt coach Frings.

"When I was a kid, I saw him play at the Weserstadion," Boyd said, adding that he wants to help his new side secure top flight football in the new season.

"I want to join the fight. And I also want to play Bundesliga again," said Boyd, who made seven appearances for Leipzig in Bundesliga 2, but has yet to play in Germany's upper tier.

"I am delighted that I will get a fair chance to play upfront in attack. That wasn't the case previously, also because of my injuries."

Boyd spent two-and-a-half years at Leipzig, joining from Rapid Vienna in 2014.

The striker impressed during his spell at Rapid, scoring 37 goals in 80 appearances. He has won 14 international caps for United States.
